Wallis has been vilified? Or perhaps the fact this book was so poorly written I couldn't help but laugh. Maybe what really sealed the deal for me was the fact the author suggests Wallis was intersexed without providing any substantial evidence. Real classy.

It hurts. Herman continued. Put it out of your mind. Much of what is being said concerns a woman who does not exist and never did exist. Perhaps it would be just as well if you stopped reading about her. She was not the only one.
It is a curious phenomenon, the urge to read about oneself, knowing beforehand that it is going to hurt or depress. Like a moth to a flame, the late Diana, Princess of Wales, was drawn to reading newspaper stories about her, however unpleasant.
Wallis Simpson - Spouse, Death & Edward - Biography
She disregarded all advice to ignore them, and as a result was left feeling worthless and impotent. It was hardly a flattering profile, the magazine presenting her as a carat gold-digger. While readers of Time complained in their droves about the choice of Wallis, there was no denying the universal fascination with the mystery woman who had caused a king to abdicate his throne. Within weeks there were Simpson and Wallis bars, while her former home at East Biddle Street in Baltimore was turned into a museum where, for an extra charge, the curious could sit in the same bath used by Wallis and have their picture taken.
The organizers brazenly contacted Herman Rogers and Lady Furness for artifacts to decorate the tawdry display. They were not forthcoming. That arbiter of public taste, Madame Tussauds wax museum, hastily arranged a new order for the royal family, placing the Duke of Windsor behind his younger brother, the Duke of Gloucester. Facing this formidable group was a vague likeness of Mrs.
She confronted the House of Windsor with a half smile and questioning eyes. He was jauntiness personified, facing each new day with a spring in his step and whistling a merry tune. A huge weight had been removed from his shoulders, a burden the new king was now manfully struggling to carry. Simpson in particular has always been demonised. A possible hermaphrodite who learned the ways of prostitutes while in Shanghai, her sexuality has been called into question, never mind what British biographers loyal to the Royal Family consider her "brash" American ways.
But in this commendably restrained biography, Anna Sebba creates some sympathy for a woman who endured a brutal and sordid first marriage before leaping into the comfort of a second, with Ernest Simpson, that, alas, could never save her. Sebba's real coup, though, is the discovery of letters between Wallis and Ernest, dated long after she had become involved with Edward. Indeed, Simpson's genuine sorrow at the loss of Ernest "the grave of everything that was us" and her terror at the Abdication show an ordinary woman caught up in events she couldn't hope to control, and help to balance the damning indictments written even by some of her closest friends.
